The stones are 4” x 9” and can accommodate two lines with a maximum of 12 characters per line. Minimum suggested donation is $150. Mazie Mazie was surrendered to us by a local family who had a flock of chickens who suddenly turned on her one day. She arrived with a severe head wound that the owner had treated with a purple colored antiseptic spray. She was very weak and exhausted when she arrived and spent over a month in our sanctuary hospital for wound care, pain meds, fluids and a lot of pampering. She is the sweetest girl, always underfoot and quickly made some good friends in our special needs coop. We ended up adopting four older quail that day, liberating them from their stressful and neglected life inside a wire bottom raised outdoor hutch. They were all missing most of their feathers and Lilac suffered from a partially paralyzed leg and could barely walk. She spent most of the time inside our house and only lived about a month beyond the day we adopted her. At least she was able to feel the soft dirt beneath her toes and take dust baths and chase bugs until her last day. The others turned out to be two more boys and a girl, which is not really the best ratio, but fortunately they all get along famously. They spend their days hanging out together running in and out of the junipers, hollowed out logs and driftwood. Ricky loves his new friends and snuggles right next to them at night inside one of their heated cabanas. Amongst the severely debilitated, dying and dead animals were cows, goats, pigs, chickens, and rabbits surrounded by moldy bread loaves, their only source of nutrition. A rescuer on the scene asked if we could take in an emaciated “hen” found cowering in the corner of one of the dark dilapidated barns who appeared to have severely injured legs and feet. Without hesitation, we made plans to adopt and rehabilitate this poor soul. We knew “she” would fit right in with our other special needs chickens. First named “Ruby,” we had to change his name to “Rudy” after hearing his soft crow inside the house at 4 o’clock the next morning! Rudy had endured unspeakable cruelty. He was emaciated, covered in feces, and had frostbitten earlobes. His comb had been “dubbed” (cut off), a procedure that is performed without anesthesia on many roosters used for breeding and cock fighting. After days of bathing, cleaning, and dissecting debris from his legs, we discovered he had no feet; only remnants of crushed bones and toes buried deep within his bloodied leg stumps remained.
